Money
Currency
Legal tender is the Aruban Florin (AFl), which is divided into 100 cents. The Florin is exchanged at a rate fixed to the US dollar (AFl 1.79 = US $1.00).
There is no need to change US dollars on arrival. They are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and shops.
ATMs
ATMs are found at many locations in Aruba (including Oranjestad, the airport, major hotels and casinos). Most dispense cash in both Aruban Florins and US dollars.
Tipping
Most restaurants automatically add a 15% gratuity, so examine the check carefully to avoid tipping twice. This is usually divided between all the restaurant staff, so if you want to reward the waiter for particularly good service, consider leaving a little extra.
For other services, the following tips are considered reasonable:
- Taxi drivers –15% of the fare
- Housekeepers - $2 per day
- Porters - $2 per bag
Tipping should be a reward for good service. It’s not about avoiding social disapproval.
